Donough O'Donovan - the Website

This is a website for storing some information that I can direct people to, if needed. Any words of wisdom such as the articles I have written for the Irish Scene magazine here in Perth, have their own page on this site.

I probably don't update this site as often as I should but it isn't exactly designed to be a Blog or a source of up to the minute news. What's it about? Well it's about my guitar and my music but the family and dogs get a little look-in.

Tangled Reel

Tangled Reel was born in September 2003. This started with an application for Fairbridge and a demo CD. We then played at the Fairbridge Festival in April 2004.
We play mostly Traditional Irish Music with the odd Scottish or French Canadian tune thrown into the mix as well as a few original tunes written in the traditional idiom.
We did our first gig for the Irish supporters of the International rules match - a luncheon at the Duxton Hotel in Perth.
Since then we have done a wedding and played at the "Buddha's Birthday" Celebrations in the Supreme Court Gardens, which was a lot of fun despite the dodgy weather at first.

Three of us were part of the group (under the Comhaltas banner)  doing the support act for a Chieftains concert here in Perth. On November 19th 2005 we are played at the Guinness Craic Ball in Langley Plaza Hotel for the second year running. And they have tentatively asked us to come back again next year (2006).

On 15th March 2005 we did a concert as part of the Summer on the Swan series for Kulcha.

In April  2005 we returned to Fairbridge Festival to host two sessions and perform in a concert at the winebar on the Sunday.
It seemed that this appearance was the last for Tangled Reel, as it was proving hard to keep it together over the prior 6 months. But Tangled Reel did come together again to do the Guinness Craic Ball for the second year running (Nov 05). Follwing this TR did a few small gigs at private events and the Craic Ball again in 2006 & 2007. In March 2007 we played for Comhaltas at the Nannup Folk Festival with Dympna substituting for Tom who went off on his honeymoon. We put in an application for The National Folk Festival in Canberra 2007 as it was the year for West Australia but unfortunately this was not successful. Teresa left to live in Ireland and that put TR on hold until Brett Hirsch stepped into the gap.

My Name

I never had a nickname and got through boarding school as one of the few who never got one. I think my real name was weird enough even in Ireland. BTW it is an Anglicisation of the Gaelic Irish word "Donnacha" or "Donnchadh" which is the word for Denis/Dennis and the Greek God of Wine - "Dionysus". So it ends in a hard (?aspirated) "C" Sound as in the word "Lough" (lake) - or should that be a soft 'k' sound? The a at the end of the gaelic word was often removed to make it easier to say the "O" at the start of the surname (O'Donovan).

Many years ago the word for 'lake' was transcribed into the English alphabet format in two different ways. In Scotland it was the 'Loch' and in Ireland the 'Lough', but the sound is the same. And it is very similar to the word 'lock', except that the 'ck' is softened and lengthened, though these may not be accepted linguistic terms.

Strings
On a website called Six Strings there has to be some mention of strings. Well they absolutely have to be Elixirs. The problem has been getting them for a reasonable price here in Perth. The answer is get them direct from the USA. My initial source for these strings in USA recently informed me that they were not allowed to mail order deliveries to destinations outside the USA. So now I am getting the strings from another source in UK.

Vico and Dalkey Island
The sun only probably shone like this once in 10 years, but it makes a good photo. I grew up around this spot.
