Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eirean
This is the title of the Irish Music Organisation with branches all over the world. Our branch here in Perth meets in the Irish Club, Subiaco. In October 2003 we hosted a meeting of Irish musicians and set-dancers in Fremantle. This Australasian Fleadh consisted of the usual competitions but also Sessions, Workshops and Concerts.
The Perth branch conducts weekly sessions and classes at the Irish Club on a Monday night.
The biggest problem has to be our isolation and visiting musicians therefore are our lifeblood.

Guitar in Irish Music

Some would say that guitar isn't in Irish Traditional Music (ITM), but that opinion is becoming a little more limited. ITM is melody-based and so the guitar as an accompaniment is considered non-essential. Anyway this is a can of worms I am going to leave closed for now. More of that later.

The idea of melody as harmony laid out in a linear fashion whereas harmony is melody stacked on top of itself, appeals to me though it may not be absolutely accurate.

Sources of Sheet Music

Tunes are definitely better learnt and remembered from ear but for some the sheet music can be a help. Also the Abc system allows easy communication of tunes on paper.

ABC2win is a computer program that turns text files into notation/sheet music. The ABC system of writing music and sharing tunes over cyberspace is a major inovation and like most other great inovations it is basically quite simple.
Once you've got the Abc worked out there is no end of tunes available freely over the Net and these can be downloaded and stored on your computer requiring little space. Then all you have to do is learn them!
